Making Mandarin a Must

Founded in 1845 and steeped in tradition, Brighton College is breaking with the past in a new, rather radical way.

RICHARD CAIRNS, Headmaster of Brighton College:

We’re introducing Mandarin Chinese as a core part of the curriculum.

KAPUR:

Richard Cairns, the school’s headmaster, is the man behind the Mandarin.

CAIRNS: We need to do business with China in the future.

The children here, aged 10, 11, 12, 13 are going to be in their 30s when China probably overtakes Japan and Germany as the second and third largest economies.

KAPUR:

China’s economy is red-hot. It grew at an official rate of 9.8% last year

and is poised to overtake France and Britain to become the world’s fourth largest economy.

Brighton College says it’s the first school in England to make Mandarin compulsory for all its students.

But it isn’t the only school offering the course.

A primary school in East London has been offering Mandarin to its students since last year.

That decision, inspired by a school official’s visit to China.

Students in both schools say they enjoy learning Mandarin.

Some say they see its economic benefits.

UNIDENTIFIED STUDENT:

The Chinese economy is kind of getting larger so that’ll be very helpful

if you want to go into the business world as a job or kind of any job that involves traveling around the world.

KAPUR:

Till they get their chance to do business with China or to visit it on holiday,

they’re getting prepared, right here in Britain.

말리카 카푸르, CNN 기자: 1845년 설립된 유서 깊은 브라이턴 칼리지가

새롭고 다소 급진적인 방식으로 과거와 결별하고 있습니다.

리처드 케언스, 브라이턴 칼리지 교장: 필수 교과 과정의 일환으로 중국 표준어를 도입하고 있습니다.

카푸르: 이 학교 교장인 리처드 케언스 씨가 바로 중국어 도입을 주도한 인물입니다.

케언스: 앞으로는 중국과 사업을 해야 합니다.

지금 10~13세의 이곳 학생들이 30대가 될 즈음에는

아마도 중국이 일본과 독일을 제치고 세계 제2, 제3의 경제대국이 될 겁니다.

카푸르: 중국 경제가 달아오르고 있습니다.

지난해 공식 집계된 성장률이 9.8%였던 중국은 프랑스와 영국을 바짝 추격하며

세계 제4의 경제대국으로 올라설 만반의 태세를 갖추고 있습니다.

브라이턴 칼리지 측은 자신들이 영국에서 중국어를 전학년 필수 과목으로 채택한 최초의 학교라고 말합니다.

하지만, 이 학교가 중국어 교과 과정을 제공하는 유일한 학교는 아닙니다.

이스트 런던에 소재한 한 초등학교는 작년부터 학생들에게 중국어 수업을 진행해 왔습니다.

그 같은 결정은 한 학교 관계자의 중국 방문에 기인한 것이었습니다.

양 측 학교 학생들은 중국어 학습이 재미있다고 말합니다.

일부 학생들은 중국어 학습이 경제적 측면에서도 유익하다고 말합니다.

익명의 학생: 중국 경제 규모가 점점 커지고 있기 때문에

비즈니스 세계에 뛰어들거나 직업적으로 전세계를 돌아다녀야 한다면 중국어가 아주 유용할 것입니다.

카푸르: 중국과 사업을 하기 위해서든 휴가 때 중국을 방문하기 위해서든

기회가 주어질 때까지 그들은 바로 이곳 영국에서 그때를 준비할 것입니다.
