EU to Compete in Education

The European Union is flexing its academic muscle in a bid to topple the U.S. from its ivory tower.

The U.S. is set to unveil plans for a rival to the venerable Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It’s afraid it’s lagging behind the U.S. in technological expertise and the risk to be overtaken by the likes of China and India. EU President Jos? Manuel Barroso says a new elite university will help address that balance. But don’t dust off your mortarboard just yet. EU lawmakers haven’t decided where the university will be located or what form it’ll take.

유럽연합(EU)이 학문적 역량을 넓혀 미국의 명문대학을 뛰어넘으려는 시도를 하고 있습니다.

EU는 명문 매사추세츠 공과 대학에 맞설 경쟁 대학 설립 방안을 발표할 예정입니다.

EU는 기술 전문성에서 미국에 뒤처지게 되고,

중국 및 인도와 같은 국가들에게 추월당할까봐 우려하고 있습니다.

호세 마누엘 바로소EU 집행위원장은 새로운 명문대학의 설립이 (학문적) 균형을 이루는 데

기여할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 하지만, 벌써부터 입학을 준비하지는 마십시오.

EU 의원들은 대학이 세워질 위치와 구체적인 대학 형태에 대해 아직 결정하지 못했으니까요.
