제14장 관계부사

선행사가 시간, 장소, 이유, 방법 등을 나타낼 때 (전치사 + 관계대명사(which))는

각각 관계부사 when, where, why, how 로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다.

관계대명사는 (접속사 + 대명사)의 역할을 하고,

관계부사는 (접속사 + 부사(구))의 역할을 하여 선행사를 수식한다.

 

시간: the time(선행사), when(관계부사), in/on/at which(전치사 + 관계대명사)
장소: the place(선행사), where(관계부사), in/at which(전치사 + 관계대명사)
이유: the reason(선행사), why(관계부사), for which(전치사 + 관계대명사)
방법: (the way)(선행사), how(관계부사), in which(전치사 + 관계대명사)
  

1. when: 선행사가 (시간)을 나타낼 때

Sunday is the day when we don't go to school.
(= Sunday is the day on which we don't go to school.)
  

2. where: 선행사가 (장소)를 나타낼 때
That is the house where a famous singer lived.
(= That is the house in which a famous singer lived.)
  

3. why: 선행사가 (이유)를 나타낼 때
Do you know the reason why she is angry?
(= Do you know the reason for which she is angry?)
  

4. how: 선행사가 (방법)을 나타낼 때
Please tell me how you solved the problem.
(= Please tell me the way you solved the problem.)
(= Please tell me the way that(in which) you solved the problem.)
  

5. 관계부사의 생략

#a the time ..., when the place where ..., the reason why ... 등의 형태에서는

선행사나 관계부사 중 하나를 생략해도 된다.

#b the way how ...의 경우 선행사와 관계부사 중 하나를 반드시 생략해야 한다.
  

6. that: 구어체에서는 관계부사를 대신하여 that 을 사용할 수 있다.
That's the reason that (why) I came to see you.
The day that(when) she arrived was very hot.

4. 두 문장의 뜻이 같아지도록 빈 칸에 알맞은 말을 쓰시오.

(2) That is the store where I bought some food.

보충학습: 

관계부사는 (전치사 + 관계대명사)로 바꿀 수 있다.
