Disney, Pixar* Merge* in $7.4B Deal* 

 

HUGH RIMINTON, CNN Anchor: Disney is to buy the animation phenomenon Pixar Studios, ending months of speculation. The deal is worth $7.4 billion, a slight premium over Pixar’s share price. The deal had seemed on the brink of collapse after tensions between the former Disney chief, Michael Eisner and Pixar Chairman Steve Jobs prompted Pixar to end its distribution deal. But Robert Iger, Disney’s new CEO, mended the fences, ultimately convincing Jobs that selling Pixar was the right move.

STEVE JOBS, Chairman of Pixar: To make a deal like this work, you really have to have a strong personal relationship with the person running the parent company. In this case, that’s Bob Iger. And you need to really have a high degree of trust that they really understand, in this case, Pixar. And as I got to know Bob, I developed that trust and respect.

RIMINTON: Meanwhile, Iger said that capturing Pixar was his number one priority.

ROBERT IGER, CEO of Dinsey: Animation really is the heart and soul of the company, dating back to Walt’s days in the late 20’s. So I thought that a real imperative for the company and for me as its new CEO was to make sure that we were making great feature animation movies.

Pixar has been doing that for quite a long period of time. We’ve been a partner of theirs and have watched in awe and in wonder how they’ve done it. And when I considered all the different alternatives that we had at a company to achieve this goal, to make great animated films, this ended up rising to the top of all the different choices that we had.

RIMINTON: Under the deal, Jobs who also heads Apple Compute, will take a seat on Disney’s board and become Disney’s largest individual shareholder.
