Nepal Pro-democracy Protest Becomes Victory Rally 

 

“People Power Wins” That’s Tuesday morning’s headline in the Katmandu Post. Demonstrating turned to rejoicing after the Nepalese King Gyanendra bowed to weeks of protest and agreed to reinstate parliament. On the streets of the capital, thousands took part in impromptu victory celebrations. The seven-party opposition alliance named 84-year-old former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala as the new head of government. King Gyanendra made concessions hich effectively returned power to elected politicians in a late night speech on Monday. But the opposition’s united front has collapsed as Maoist rebels called the King’s offer a “sham” and vowed to blockade Katmandu and other major centers.
