제3장 조동사 (1)

cam, may, must, will, shall, would, should 등과 같이 동사 앞에 위치하여

그 동사에 특별한 의미를 부여하는 것을 조동사라고 한다.

조동사는 주어에 따른 변화가 없고, 그 뒤에는 반드시 동사의 원형이 온다.
  

1. may: 허가 (... 해도 좋다)와 불확실한 추측 (... 일지도 모른다)를 나타낸다.
May I come in? Yes, you may., No, you may not.(허가)
The news may be true.(불확실한 추측)
  

2. must: 의무 (... 해야 한다), 확실한 추측 (... 임에 틀림없다)를 나타낸다.
I must(have to) study hard.(의무)
He must be a teacher(확실한 추측)
  

3. would: will의 과거형 외에 과거의 불규칙한 습관을 나타낸다.
He said that he would go to the party(시제의 일치)
-> He said, "I will go to the party."
She would often go fishing when she was young.(과거의 습관)
  

4. should: shall의 과거형 외에 의무, 당연 (...해야 한다)를 나타낸다.
You should be kind to old people.(의무)
