17. the + 형용사
The rich are not always happy. (부자가 반드시 행복한 것은 아니다.)
  

Check Point
(1) (the + 형용사)는 (-한 사람들)이라는 뜻으로 복수취급.
We took care of the wounded.

우리들은 부상자들을 돌보았다.
  

(2) (the + 형용사)는 추상명사와 같은 기능을 한다.
The best is often the enemy of the good.

최선은 종종 선의 적 -> 완전을 추구하면 오히려 실패한다.

18. by the week
You will be paid by the week. (당신은 주급을 받게 될 것이다.)
  

Check Point
(1) (by the + 계량단위)는 (...단위로)의 뜻.
(2) (V + O + 전치사(by, on 등) + the + 신체의 일부) 
 

1) (catch--by the arm) (...의 팔을 붙잡다):

(잡다)의 유사어 -> seize(take, hold, grab, pull) someone by the ...
 

2) (hit--on the back) (...의 등을 때리다):

두드리다의 유사어 -> knock(pat, strike) someone on the ...

-> ignore (무시하다), neglect (경시하다), have nothing in common with (...와 공통점이 없다.)

I was all but dead at that time. (나는 그때 죽은 거나 마찬가지였다.)
  

Check Point
(1) (all but--> = (as good as--> = (almost-->는 (...와 다름없음)이라는 뜻.
(2) (all too--> = (only too--> (-> 38)는 (유감스럽게도 ...) 라는 뜻.
  

The report is only too true. (그 보고는 유감스럽게도 사실이다.)

 

주의: all but--(=all except)에는 (...을 제외한 전부)라는 뜻도 있다. 
cf. All were there but him.

20. be sure to 
John Is sure to win the game. (존은 분명히 그 시합에 이길 것이다.)
  

Check Point
(1) (be sure to~)는 (분명히 ...일 것이다)라는 뜻.

= I am sure that John will win the game.

= It is certain that John will win the game.
  

(2) (be sum of~)는 (...을 확신하고 있다)라는 뜻으로, 주어의 판단을 나타낸다.
He is sure of winning. (그는 자신이 이길 거라고 확신하고 있다.)

= He is sure that he will win.

 

암기: be sure to = be certain to = be bound to
