구문 101. as-as...can
Come as early as you can. 될 수 있는 대로 일찍 와라.
  

1. (as-as + 주어 + can(could))은 '가능한 한...'이라는 뜻을 나타내며, 

(as-as possible)도 같은 뜻을 나타낸다.
=Come as early as possible.
  

2. (as-as ever)는 '여전히...'라는 뜻.
Her eyes were as bright as ever.
그녀의 눈은 여전히 초롱초롱했다.
  

3. (배수 + as-as...)는 '...의 몇 배-'라는 뜻을 나타낸다.
Australia is about thirty times as large as Korea.
호주는 한국의 약 30배 크다.
  

4. (not so (as)-as...)는 '...만큼 -않다'라는 뜻.
She is not as successful as his sister.
그녀는 동생만큼 성공하지 못했다.

 

참고: (not so (as)-as...)는 비교급을 사용해 바꿔 말할 수 있다.
He isn't so old as I.=I'm older than he.

Sue is more clever than any other student in the class.

수우는 반의 어떤 다른 학생보다 영리하다.
  

1. (비교급 + than any other ->  는 '다른 어떤 -보다 ...'라는 뜻. 

any other에 이어지는 명사는 단수명사가 된다.
=No other student in the class is taller than Sue.
=She is as tall as any student in the class.
  

2. (Nothing is more...than->은 '-보다 ...한 것은 없다'라는 뜻.
Nothing is more important than health.
건강보다 중요한 것은 없다.
  

3. (Nothing is so (as)...as ->  는 '-만큼 ...한 것은 없다'라는 뜻. 

원급을 이용해 최상급의 내용을 나타낸다.
Nothing is so precious as time.
시간만큼 귀중한 것은 없다.
  

4. 2, 3의 예문은 각각 다음과 같이 바꿔 쓸 수 있다.
2 ->  Nothing is so important as health.
3 ->  Nothing is more precious than time.

수능영어 Super Reading 대책
동사와 함께 쓰이는 전치사들을 익힐 것.
  

앞에서 deprive A of B라는 표현이 나와서 이

deprive와 of의 '연결관계'를 파악하지 못하면 안된다고 했는데, 

이렇게 동사가 특정한 전치사와 서로 멀리 떨어져 있는 '동사군'에 주의해야 한다.

 

다음의 각 영문을 해석해 보자.
(A) Parents always provide their children with what they need to live.
(B) Her letter relieved her mother of anxiety.
(C) You should know what is wrong from what is right.
  

대표적인 동사군의 세 가지 유형을 들어보았다.
  

(A)는 with가 '부여'를 의미하며, 

provide A with B는 'A에게 B를 주다, 제공하다'라는 뜻이다. 

이 유형 중 자주 출제되는 주요동사는 

provide, supply, present, equip, furnish, fill, load, stuff 등이다.
  

(B)는 of가 '분리'를 의미하며, 

relieve A of B는 'A로부터 B를 제거하다(A와 B를 분리시키다)'라는 뜻이다. 

이 패턴으로 쓰이는 주요동사는

deprive, rob, rid, strip, clear, relieve, cure, ease 등이다.
  

(C)는 from이 '구별'을 의미하며, know A from B는 'A와 B를 구별하다'이다. 

절대로 'B로부터 A를 알다'라고 해석하지 말 것. 

이 유형에 속하는 주요동사는 tell, know, distinguish이다.
  

해석
(A) 부모는 항상 아이가 살아가기 위해 필요한 것을 준다.
(B) 그녀의 편지를 읽고 엄마는 걱정이 사라졌다.
(C) 너는 좋은 일과 나쁜 일을 구별해야만 한다.

이러한 동사패턴을 알고 있으면 간단하지만, 이 관계를 모르면 순간적으로 함정에 빠지고 만다.

이런 유형의 동사어법을 철저히 익혀두어야 한다.
