1. (If->는 '만일...라면', (unless->(if-not)는
'만일...이 아니라면'이라는 뜻으로 조건을 나타낸다.
If you don't call him, he will not come.
=Unless you call him, he will not come.
그에게 전화하지 않으면 그는 오지 않을 것이다.
참고: 조건을 나타내는 절 안에서는 현재형으로 미래를 대신한다.
If you _eat_ too much, you will get sick.
2. (명령문, and->는
'...하라, 그러면...', (명령문, or->는 '...하라, 그렇지 않으면...'이라는 뜻을 나타낸다.
Study hard, and you will pass the exam.
열심히 해라, 그러면 합격할 것이다.

구문 142. If S were-, S would + 동사원형
If I had wings, I would fly to you.
내가 날개가 있다면 너에게 날아갈 텐데.
'만일 -라면 ...할 텐데'라고 현재의 사실에 반하는 것을 가정할 때는
조건절에 동사의 과거형(be동사는 주어가 무엇이든 were)를 쓴다.
이것을 가정법 과거라고 한다.
내용은 현재이지만 과거형을 쓴다.
가정법 과거는 (If S + 과거형-, S would + 동사원형...)으로 나타낸다.
would 외에 could, should, might도 쓰인다.
구문 143. If S had + 과거분사-, S could have + 과거분사
If I had had money, I could have bought it.
돈이 있었더라면 나는 그것을 살 수 있었을 텐데.
'만약 ...였다면 ...했을 텐데'라고 과거의 사실에 반하는 것을 가정할 때는
조건절에 동사의 과거완료형을 쓴다. 이것을 가정법 과거완료라고 한다.
가정법 과거완료는 (If S had + 과거분사-, S could have + 과거분사...).
could 외에 would, should, might도 쓴다.

1. '만일 -라면 ...일 것이다'라고 현재 또는 미래의 일에 대해서
'혹시' 하는 심정으로 가정을 나타낼 때는 조건절에 should를 쓰며,
(If S should + 동사 원형-, S would + 동사 원형...)으로 나타낸다.
이것을 가정법 미래라고 한다.
주절에는 would 같은 조동사의 과거형 외에 조동사의 현재형이나, 명령문 등도 온다.
If he should call, tell him I'll call back.
혹시 그가 전화하면 내가 다시 걸겠다고 해요.
참고: If를 생략하면 Should he call, tell him I'll call back.
2. (If S were to + 동사 원형-, S + should(would, could, might)...)
이 구문은 If절에서 '단순과거형'을 쓴 '가정법 과거' 문장과 동일한 뜻.
If you were to ask him, he might help you.
=If you asked him, he might help you.
If Helen were to make an effort, she could do better.
=If Helen made an effort, she could do better.
참고: If를 생략하면 If you were to ask him-이 Were you to ask him-이 된다.

1. (If it were not for->는
가정법 과거로서 '만약 ...이 없으면'이라는 뜻을 나타낸다.
(If it had been for->는 가정법 과거완료로서
'만일 -가 없었더라면'이라는 뜻을 나타낸다.
If it had not been for your help, I would have failed.
너의 도움이 없었더라면 나는 실패했을 것이다.
2. 가정법의 if는 생략이 가능하다.
생략했을 경우 동사나 조동사가 주어 앞에 나와서 도치가 된다.

구문 151. otherwise...

서둘러요, 그렇지 않으면 버스를 놓칠 거예요.
(-, otherwise...)는 '-, 그렇지 않으면...'이라는 뜻.
(-, otherwise) 부분은 (if you don't hurry up)으로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다.
주의: otherwise는 가정법 과거완료의 문장으로 바꿔 쓸 수 있을 때가 많다.
