V for Vendetta, Pure Fiction Or Real-Life Events?

 

[V for Vendetta] This country stands on the edge of oblivion.

JASON CARROL, CNN Correspondent: He’s America’s newest box office hero,

an illusive terrorist who’s not afraid to use violence to make a point.

V for Vendetta is earning a lot of “buzz” and, as America’s number one movie,

a lot of “bucks” for its look at a totalitarian society in the year 2020. In the movie,

America has fallen into civil war, following the war in Iraq,

a war that in real life marked its third anniversary this weekend.

GEORGE W. BUSH, U.S. President:

Americans have never retreated in the face of thugs and assassins and we will not begin now.

CARROL:

In Vendetta a power-mad leader uses fearmongering and intimidation to rule society with an iron fist.

While a masked man named “V” stokes rebellion by unapologetically blowing up buildings.

And guess what? He’s the hero.

PAUL DERGARABEDIAN, Exhibitor Relations:

V is, in essence, a terrorist and getting his way through assassination, through terrorism.

But the movie is so effective in what it does, you’re actually rooting for this character.

CARROL:

That’s right.

America is flocking to a movie where the main character can arguably be described as a terrorist.

Controversial? Of course. So Showbiz Tonight just had to ask the film’s co-star Natalie Portman,

“Is any resemblance to real life purely intentional?”

NATALIE PORTMAN, Actress:

Because it happened in an imaginary world,

there are so many different real-life historical and current events that you could connect it to...

that it really sort of respects the audience to interpret it for themselves.

It’s not like “This is what you should think.”

CARROL:

What many audiences are interpreting is a movie

that some say strongly parallels what’s going on today.

In the real world you have wiretaps, suicide bombings, and the post-9/11 language of a leader

who uses tough talk to rally the people against terrorism.

BUSH:

Whether we bring our enemies to justice or bring justice to our enemies... justice will be done.

CARROL:

Still, some critics are suggesting

that the brutal regime shown in the movie don’t resemble real-life government

as much as they resemble real-life fundamentalist terrorists.

CHRISTIAN TOTO, Washington Times:

It’s just funny that there haven’t been many movies that really critique the terrorists that are out there today,

the real-life killers. You’ll more often see critiques of our government.

CARROL:

V for Vendetta was written by the guys who brought you The Matrix.

And the filmmakers are quick to point out that Vendetta is based on a story

that wasn’t aimed at President Bush’s government but rather former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Still, it is the modern world that audiences are connecting to Vendetta.

And it’s probably safe to say that the filmmakers are not complaining.

DERGARABEDIAN:

I don’t think controversy really hurts a movie and I think that,

in this case, the political overtones with V for Vendetta actually may have helped the film.

CARROL:

And V for Vendetta’s box office success helped add a new spark to a grimly modern debate.

[<브이 포 벤데타>] 미국은 어느덧 (테러의 공포를) 잊어 가고 있다.

제이슨 캐롤, CNN 기자: 미국 극장가의 새로운 영웅으로 떠오른 그는

자신의 주장을 관철시키기 위해 폭력도 서슴지 않는 가상의 테러리스트입니다.

<브이 포 벤데타>는 많은 논란을 불러일으키며, 미국 극장가 흥행 순위 1위에 오른 작품답게

서기 2020년의 전체주의 사회에 대한 묘사로 많은 돈을 벌어들이고 있습니다.

영화 속에서 미국은 이라크전에 이어 내전 상태에 빠지게 됩니다.

실제로 이라크전은 이번 주말, 발발 3주년을 맞았습니다.

조지 W. 부시, 미국 대통령: 미국인들은 살인자나 암살자에 맞서 결코 물러선 적이 없으며,

그런 일은 앞으로도 결코 없을 것입니다.

캐롤: 영화 <벤데타>에서는 권력에 눈이 먼 지도자가 (국민들에게)

공포를 조장하고 위협을 가하며 철권통치를 펼칩니다.

한편 가면을 쓴‘브이’라는 인물이 인정사정없이 건물을 폭파하며 폭동을 일으킵니다.

그래서 어떻게 됐을까요? 바로 영웅이 됩니다.

폴 데가라베디언, 이그지비터 릴레이션즈: 실상 브이는

테러리스트로서 암살과 테러 행위로 자신의 목적을 관철시키고 있습니다.

하지만 영화 속 극적 묘사가 빼어난 덕분에 사람들은 이 인물에게 성원을 보내게 됩니다.

캐롤: 맞습니다.

지금 미국인들은, 어쩌면 테러리스트로 볼 수도 있는 인물이 주인공으로 나오는 영화를 보러

극장으로 몰려들고 있습니다.

논란의 여지요? 당연히 있죠.

따라서 <쇼비즈 투나잇>에서는 이 영화의 공동주연인 나탈리 포트만 양에게,

과연 ‘어떤 현실 상황을 의도적으로 반영한 것인지’물어보았습니다.

나탈리 포트만, 여배우: 가상의 세계에서 벌어지는 이야기니까,

아주 다양한 실제 역사적 사건이나 최근 상황들과도 연관시킬 수 있겠죠.

그래서 정말 관객들 나름의 해석에 맡길 뿐이죠. ‘반드시 이렇게 보아야 한다’라는 게 아니에요.

캐롤: 많은 관객들이 나름대로 해석하고 있는 이 영화를

일각에서는 오늘날 벌어지고 있는 상황과 상당히 유사하다고 말합니다.

현실 세계에도 도청이나 자살폭탄, 그리고 9 11 테러 이후 강경한 어조로 국민들에게

대(對)테러리즘을 각성시키는 대통령이 있기 때문이죠.

부시: 우리의 적을 정의로 이끌던지, 정의를 적에게로 이끌던지, 정의는 실현될 것입니다.

캐롤: 하지만 일부 영화 평론가들은 영화 속 테러리스트들은

실제 (이슬람) 원리주의 테러리스트들과 유사하지만

영화에 그려진 독재정권은 현실 세계의 정부와는 다르다고 주장합니다.

크리스찬 토토, <워싱턴 타임즈>: 오늘날 엄연히 존재하는 테러리스트들을,

실제 살인범들을 제대로 비판하는 영화가 별로 없다는 것도 매우 흥미로운 점입니다.

오히려 미국 정부를 비판하는 영화를 더 많이 보게 될 겁니다.

캐롤: <브이 포 벤데타>는 <매트릭스>를 제작한 사람들이 각본을 썼습니다.

그리고 이 영화 제작자들은 <벤데타>의 원작이 부시 정부를 겨냥한 것이 아니라

오히려 마가렛 대처 전 영국 수상을 염두에 둔 것이라고 재빠르게 지적했습니다.

하지만 여전히 관객들은 이 영화를 현실 세계와 연관짓고 있으며,

영화 제작자들도 이에 대해 별다른 불만이 없다고 말해도 무방할 듯 합니다.

데가라베디언: 이러한 논란이 영화에 타격을 주진 않을 거라고 봅니다.

제 생각에 이 경우엔 <브이 포 벤데타>에 내포된 정치적인 메시지들이 오히려 흥행에 도움이 될 것같습니다.
