제28장 전치사
  

전치사는 명사나 명사 상당 어구 앞에 놓여 형용사구, 부사구를 만들며, 

하나의 단어로 된 것 외에 두 개 이상의 단어가 모여 하나의 전치사 역할을 하는 것도 있다.
  

1. 전치사의 목적어: 

전치사 뒤에 오는 어(구)를 전치사의 목적어라고 한다.
She is in the kitchen. <- 명사
He went to the garden with her. <- 대명사(목적격)
Thank you very much for inviting me. <- 동명사
That is the house in which she was born. <- 관계대명사
Don't worry about how to do it. <- 명사구
  

2. 전치사의 후치: 

전치사는 목적어 앞에 오는 것이 원칙이지만, 경우에 따라 목적어와 떨어져 뒤에 오기도 한다.
Who(Whom) are you looking for? <- 의문사가 목적어
(= For whom are you looking?)
They have no chairs which they can sit on. <- 관계대명사가 목적어
(= They have no chairs on which they can sit.)
They have no house to live in. <- 형용사적으로 쓰인 to부정사에서
She was laughed at by him. <- (동사 + 전치사)의 수동태
(= He laughed at her.)
  

3. 중요한 전치사구
I did the work _according to_ his advice. (~에 따라, ~에 의하면)
_As for_ me, I am against the plan. (~로서는, ~에 관해 말하자면)
I have no idea _as to_ who will be elected. (~에 관하여)
She went to London _by way of_ Paris. (~을 거쳐서)
He expressed his wish _by means of_ signs. (~에 의하여, ~으로)
He gave me money _in addition to_ food. (~에 더하여, ~외에도)
He spoke _in favor of_ the plan. (~에 찬성하여)
She did the work _in place of_ her sister. (~ 대신에)
We went out _in spite of_ the heavy rain. (~에도 불구하고)
_Thanks to_ his help, we were saved. (~의 덕택에)
She is _in search of_ a true friend. (~을 찾아, ~을 구하려고)

(2) Although it rained, he went out. =(__) spite of the rain, he went out.
(3) He can speak French as well as English. = He can speak French (__) addition to English.
